Sunny's Solar News ☀️

12 February, 2025

The UK's solar industry is experiencing significant developments as of February 2025, reflecting both advancements and challenges in the sector.

Industry Growth and Political Support

Recent analyses indicate that the UK is on track to add between 3 to 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity in 2025, approaching the substantial growth levels last seen in 2015. This projection underscores a robust expansion trajectory for the solar sector.

Industry leaders have noted an increase in political will supporting solar and storage ambitions. However, they emphasize that further efforts are necessary to fully realize these goals

Policy and Investment Concerns

Solar Energy UK has expressed concerns regarding potential policy decisions that could decelerate solar investments post-2030. In a letter to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, the organization warned that capping solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) investments might jeopardize approximately £26 billion in future investments.

Debates Over Solar Farm Developments

Proposed solar farm projects have sparked debates, particularly concerning their locations and potential impacts. For instance, plans to construct a solar power plant adjacent to Barnsdale Gardens in Rutland, the former home of BBC's "Gardeners' World," have faced opposition. Critics argue that such developments could disrupt local environments and heritage sites.

Ethical Supply Chain Considerations

The UK government is confronting challenges related to ethical sourcing in the solar supply chain. An amendment to the Great British Energy bill aims to prevent public funding from supporting companies implicated in forced labor, particularly concerning materials sourced from regions like Xinjiang, China. This move highlights the importance of ensuring that the transition to green energy does not inadvertently support unethical practices.
